Welcome back to this short tutorial on design and branding in Microsoft SharePoint Design . In my previous post, which you can visit here , I made a brief introduction to the new features that Microsoft has introduced in this regard.
Now it's time to dig a little deeper.
In this first chapter I will talk about Device Channels .
These are used to have various designs depending on the browser and the device on which our SharePoint 2013 portal is opened.
To start working with the Device Channels we must go to the Site Settings. Under the 'Appearance' section, we see that the first link is the 'Layout Manager'. Click on it and it will take us to a page with eight steps. It is not necessary to follow them in the order that they are established, since not all of them are mandatory. It will depend on what we want to do at each moment.
The step we are interested in now is the second one: 'Manage device channels'. We access it and on the new page the channels that we have created will appear, as well as some links to create others and edit and order the existing ones. By default, one already created and active will appear, the 'default'.
Now we are going to create a new one by clicking on 'Create new channel'.
We just have to fill in the fields that appear in the new form:
Name : This name is just to easily identify the channel among the other channels.
Aliases : Important! This is the name that will be used in the master page for the different configurations.
Description : it is advisable to give a description to detail the purpose of the channel, although it is not mandatory.
Device Inclusion Rules - Extremely important! Here you must include one or more 'user agent' strings. These will determine when this channel is applied.
Active – We'll leave this box unchecked for now, until we've finished making changes to the master page.
Now we need to edit the page layouts and master pages, depending on the effect we want to achieve.
Once we have finished, we save the changes, publish and return to the device channel manager, where we must edit our new channel to check the 'Active' box.
To solve this, you just have to follow the instructions that the page gives us and deactivate this feature, go back again to change the master and we will be able to make the desired adjustment.
We can now effectively change the way our Microsoft SharePoint 2013 site is presented based on the device it is being browsed from .
